Club Med Moorea Review |
Reviewed by Judy Herbst
We were in Club Med Moorea from June 23 to June 30, 2001. We have been to 10 other Club Meds more than 25 times over the last 15 years, so we are familiar with Club Med. This was our second time in Moorea. The last time we were there was in December, 1996. It was their rainy season. This time the weather was marvelous, not one drop of rain and lovely sunsets. It is the prettiest setting of any of the Club Meds we have gone to. The scuba diving is excellent, especially if you like sharks. There is a lot of varied sealife and much to look at. The snorkeling is also fine. The people who were water skiing were pleased also.
There is no pool so they do the water aerobics in the ocean That is the good news. The bad news is that the current GO team there is the worst we have ever seen in a Club Med on any of our trips. They do not have the energy we associate with Club Med and outside of the Animateur (club clown), they were not particularly friendly
If you like tennis, there are 5 courts, but there is NO tennis GO to set up games or matches. They also did not arrange very many activities such as basketball (they do have a court). They did arrange a few volleyball games in the afternoon. The evening shows were also lackluster. As I said, the energy level of the GO's was low. On the weekends, there is an influx of locals and there are not enough chairs on the beaches for everyone so put your stuff on a chair early to reserve it. Obviously this also goes if the club is pretty full. There were about 250 regular guests the week we were there.
The food was not very good either. There was only baguette and a wheat bread, not the assortment of breads that they normally have. The sauces on the cooked dishes were mostly tasteless. Their attempt at Mexican night themed food was a bad joke. The grilled chicken at both lunch & dinner was generally overcooked and dry. The grilled meats (from New Zealand and Australia) were very good, as was the grilled seafood kebabs. The salads at lunch were not varied from day to day but were very good.
There is no air conditioning in the rooms which is all right because they have fans and the evenings are cool. Make sure to get a room on the beach because they catch the breeze and I understand the rooms that are near the tennis courts do not get much of a breeze. The 'C' group of rooms are the best. They are on the beach, shady, generally quiet, but not too far from the main areas. After that, I would suggest the 'A' or 'T' rooms. The 'E' & 'F' rooms are not bad also except that there is very little shade so they get hot during the day.
You do not want to be too near the disco as it is open air and you can hear the music because due to the lack of air conditioning you need to leave your windows open. This Club is quieter than most of the other Club Meds and there is not as much activity even with a good GO team. The diving is extraordinary so if you are a scuba diver, it is still a good choice. Or if you prefer a quiet Club. There were quite a few 'honeymooners' there. There were also quite a few families. Not a good choice for singles unless you are a major scuba enthusiast.
